Characterization of liquid targets in Vacuum condition

In recent years, durable target is required according to increase of the beam power. To solve this problem, a liquid film was formed in vacuum and tested it as a target. An ethanol and a mercury were selected as liquid target materials, and we investigated whether the liquid sheet could be formed stably in a vacuum and how about the vacuum pressure. As a result, it was confirmed that the liquid films were stably formed in both case and the pressures with the films were about the vapor pressure of the materials.

Application of satellite remote sensing in geological environment investigation; Development of a geobotanical remote sensing method for estimating high water table areas in a humid warm-temperate region

This study developed a geobotanical remote sensing method for estimating high water table areas such as groundwater discharge points using differences in the growth conditions of forest trees induced by moisture supply from groundwater in a humid warm-temperate forest area. A new vegetation index (VI) termed AgbNDVI (Added green band NDVI) was proposed to discriminate the differences. The AgbNDVI proved to be more sensitive to water stress on green vegetation than existing VIs: SAVI and EVI2, and possessed a strong linear correlation with the vegetation fraction. To validate the proposed method, a 23 km$$^{2}$$ study area was selected in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. The AgbNDVI values were calculated from atmospheric corrected SPOT HRV data. To correctly detect high VI points, the influence factors on tree growth were identified using the AgbNDVI values, DEM and forest type data; the study area was then divided into 555 segments according to combinations of the influence factors: elevation, slope gradient, slope aspect and forest type. Thresholds for detecting high VI points were defined for each segment based on a histogram of AgbNDVI values. By superimposing the high VI points on topographic and geologic maps, most of the high VI points are clearly located on the concave/convex slopes and near the geologic boundaries prone to groundwater runoff. In addition, field investigations support the correctness of the high VI points, because the growth increments and biomass of trees (${it Pinus densiflora}$) are greater than at points other than the high VI points, and they are located around known groundwater seeps and in a high water table area. Consequently, the proposed method can be expected to provide useful information for characterizing hydrogeological structures by combining with conventional photo-geological interpretation.

The inert NpO$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ complex with a fluorescein-modified phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid was found by kinetic selection using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) from a small chemical library. The small spontaneous dissociation rate constant of 8$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ s$$^{-1}$$ (the half-life of 23 hours) was determined. This is the singly-charged NpO$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ complex exhibiting unusual kinetic inertness in aqueous solution, one million times slower than widely accepted fast kinetics of neptunyl complexes. Selective fluorescence detection of NpO$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ was achieved in PAGE with a detection limit of 68 pmol dm$$^{-3}$$(17 fg). This system was successfully applied to simulated spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste samples.

A superconducting accelerating cavity is indispensable to realize a driver linac that meets the requirements of ADS. The low-energy section of the accelerators, which is normal conducting one, was redesigned to reflect the recent progress in the development of superconducting accelerator cavities. In addition, we are developing a prototype cavity for the spoke-type cavity that has not been developed well. This section reports on the latest research and development of ADS linacs at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

The Collaborative Laboratories for Advanced Decommissioning Science (CLADS), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), had been conducting the Nuclear Energy Science & Technology and Human Resource Development Project (hereafter referred to "the Project") in FY2020. The Project aims to contribute to solving problems in the nuclear energy field represented by the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO). For this purpose, intelligence was collected from all over the world, and basic research and human resource development were promoted by closely integrating/collaborating knowledge and experiences in various fields beyond the barrier of conventional organizations and research fields. The sponsor of the Project was moved from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to JAEA since the newly adopted proposals in FY2018. On this occasion, JAEA constructed a new research system where JAEA-academia collaboration is reinforced and medium-to-long term research/development and human resource development contributing to the decommissioning are stably and consecutively implemented. Among the adopted proposals in FY2019, this report summarizes the research results of the "Development of radiation hardened diamond image sensing devices" conducted in FY2020. The research objective of this project is to develop image sensing devices which work under the high radiation condition. The devices will be realized using radiation hardened diamond semiconductor devices as charge transfer devices and photodetectors. The research project has mainly two targets such as to confirm charge coupled devices operation on diamond unipolar devices and to characterize photo conductivity of diamond detectors.

Dependence of charge-exchange efficiency on cooling water temperature of a beam transport line

The 3 GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex supplies a high-intensity proton beam for neutron experiments. Various parameters are monitored to achieve a stable operation, and it was found that the oscillations of the charge-exchange efficiency and cooling water temperature were synchronized. We evaluated the orbit fluctuations at the injection point using a beam current of the injection dump, which is proportional to the number of particles that miss the foil and fail in the charge exchange, and profile of the injection beam. The total width of the fluctuations was approximately 0.072 mm. This value is negligible from the user operation viewpoint as our existing beam position monitors cannot detect such a small signal deviation. This displacement corresponds to a 1.63$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$ variation in the dipole magnetic field. Conversely, the magnetic field variation in the L3BT dipole magnet, which was estimated by the temperature change directly, is 4.08$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$. This result suggested that the change in the cooling water temperature is one of the major causes of the efficiency fluctuation.

New design of high power mercury target vessel of J-PARC

To realize a high beam power operation at the J-PARC, a mercury target vessel covered with water shroud was developed. In the first step, to realize an operation at 500 kW, the basic structure of the initial design was followed and the connection method between the mercury vessel and the water shroud was changed. Additionally, the operation at a beam power of 500 kW was realized in approximately eight months. In the second step, to realize the operation at 1 MW, the new structure in which only rear ends of vessels were connected was investigated. Cooling of the mercury vessel is used to reduce thermal stress and thick vessels of the water shroud are used to increase stiffness for the internal pressure; therefore, it was adopted. The stress in each vessel was lower than the allowable stress based on the pressure vessel code criteria prescribed in the Japan Industrial Standard, and confirmation was obtained that the operation with a beam power of 1 MW could be conducted.

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a radiotherapy for the treatment of intractable cancer. In BNCT precise determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample before neutron irradiation is crucial for control of the neutron irradiation time and the neutron dosimetry. We have applied the Charged Particle Activation Analysis (CPAA) to non-destructive and accurate determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample. The experiment was performed at JAEA Tandem Accelerator using an 8 MeV proton beam. The 478 keV $$gamma$$ ray of $$^{7}$$Be produced in the $$^{10}$$B(p,$$alpha$$)$$^{7}$$Be reaction was used to quantify the $$^{10}$$B, and $$gamma$$ rays of $$^{56}$$Co originating from the reaction with Fe in blood was used to normalize the $$gamma$$-ray intensity. The results demonstrated that the present CPAA method can be applied to the determination of the $$^{10}$$B concentration in the blood sample.

Structure and stability of montmorillonite edge faces (110), (010), (100), and (130) of the layer charges y = 0.5 and 0.33 are investigated by the first-principles electronic calculations based on the density functional theory. Stacking and single layer models are tested for understanding the effect of stacking on the stability of montmorillonite edge faces. Most stacking layers stabilize the edge faces by making hydrogen bonds between the layers; therefore, the surface energy of stacking layers is reduced rather than the single layer model. This indicates that the surface energy of edge faces should be estimated depending on the swelling conditions. Lowest surface energies of (010) and (130) edge faces were realized by the presence of Mg ions on the edge faces. These edge faces have a strong adsorption site for cations due to local negative charge of the edges.

Diffusion and adsorption behavior of uranyl (UO$$_2^{2+}$$) species is important for the performance assessment of radioactive waste disposal. The diffusion behaviors of UO$$_2^{2+}$$, K$$^{+}$$, CO$$_3^{2-}$$ and Cl$$^{-}$$ and H$$_{2}$$O in the aqueous solutions were evaluated by molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. The diffusion coefficient (De) of UO$$_2^{2+}$$ is the smallest and is 26% less than the self-diffusion coefficient of H$$_{2}$$O. For the aqueous solution with high concentration of carbonate ions, uranyl carbonate complexes: UO$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$ and UO$$_{2}$$(CO$$_{3}$$)$$^{2-}$$ can be observed. For the clay (montmorillonite or illite)-aqueous solution systems, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of UO$$_2^{2+}$$ and K$$^{+}$$ were evaluated by MD calculations. The distribution coefficients (Kd) increase with the layer charge of clay, and Kd of UO$$_2^{2+}$$ might be smaller than that of K$$^{+}$$. Further, their two-dimensional diffusion coefficients were relatively small in the adsorption layer and were extremely small for illite with higher layer charge.
